Sermon Study Guide

Q1: Icebreaker: Name someone you would say is very blessed. What makes him/her blessed?

Q2: In John 17:13-19, Jesus prays for His disciples. He does not pray for them to be removed from the world, but to be sent. However, in their sending, He prays that they will not become people “of” the world. In what ways do you live in this tension today, of being in the world but trying to not be “of” the world?

Q3: In Acts 20:32-35, the Apostle Paul reflects on His life of mission serving Jesus and establishing many churches. During this time, Paul also worked as a tentmaker so as to not be a burden. Why do you think Paul did that?

Q4: Makarios is the Greek word for “blessed.” It is also used in the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount. It doesn’t just mean material and physical blessing, but the inner state of gratefulness and contentment that can come from our relationship with God. When was the last time you felt blessed according to this definition?Q5: Paul quotes Jesus in Acts 20:35 that “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Share with each other times where you have felt the same way? Do you feel more blessed when you receive, or when you give?

Q6: Jesus did not come to earth to be worshipped, but to give his life as a ransom for many. In what ways do we as His disciples follow His ways?

Q6: We are blessed to be a blessing. Do you think your life is lacking in one or the other, or imbalanced towards the former or the latter? Share with a friend your thoughts and action plan.

Q7: Which part of this message on blessing resonated with you the most? Which part surprised you the most?
