Sermon Study Guide

Q1: Icebreaker: What would you think of someone in a photo with some “bad company”?

Q2: In the beginning of Mark 2, four friends bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus through the roof. It’s a remarkable act of friendship and faith. When is the last time a friend did something this remarkable for you? Or when is that last time you did something for your friend that showed how much you were concerned and care for him/her? Share your wonderful testimonies with one another.

Q3: Jesus is not just concerned with the man’s physical healing but also his spiritual restoration. And Jesus shows that He has the authority to forgive his sins, in addition to his physical body. How much do you focus on your spiritual renewal versus your physical renewal?

Q4: Matthew was a tax collector which was a profession much hated by his fellow Jews. Yes Jesus called him to become one of his 12 disciples. Matthew is so joyful he celebrates with Jesus at his home. How do you feel knowing that Jesus called people like Matthew, so He also calls similar people to come to Christ today?

Q5: How do you view sinners? To what extent is it accurate and fair to judge people by their past, and to what extent is it not? Do you view people more from the lens of the scribes and Pharisees, or from Jesus? How did you come to view people in this way?

Q6: Should Christians befriend sinners in the same way that Jesus did? Pastor Joey lists 3 applicable questions to ask yourself when being intentional about choosing friendships. Which one do you find most useful?

Q7: Which part of this message on Jesus the forgiver of sins and friend of sinners surprised you the most? Which part resonated with you the most? Who is someone you will reconsider the friendship and why? Who is someone you will consider reaching out to again and why?
