Sermon Study Guide
Q1: Observation #1: The storm comes when Jesus is with them. Why do you think Christians still face storms in their lives, even after becoming followers of Christ?
Q2: Observation #2: The storm is outside their control. Do you agree that storms are sometimes caused by things out of our control (e.g. health, relationships, circumstances)? Can you think of a personal example of a storm that was out of your control, and how did you handle it?
Q3: Observation #3: The disciples saw Jesus sleeping and questioned Him about His inaction. Interestingly, in Mark’s account they do not ask Jesus to save them from the storm, instead they ask Him whether He cares about them in their plight. How often do we ask the same question in our own storms? In what ways can we remind ourselves of His love, even when it feels He is distant?
Q4: Observation #4: Instead of waving His hands like we see wizards do in movies, Jesus simply rebukes the storm and it is calm. Rather than feel safe and happy, this causes the disciples to be even more afraid, because Jesus is the One greater than the great storm. How does this change the way we view God’s power?
Q5: Observation #5: Jesus asks the disciples where their faith is. Faith is a journey. Just as trust is grown over time, faith is also grown over time. Can you recall a time when your faith grew stronger because of a storm in your life? How did that experience shape your relationship with Jesus?
Q6: Application: Instead of teaching people how to run away, avoid, or be surprised at storm, why don’t we teach people how to face it and brace it? No matter how protected we try to live, no one is immune to pains in the human experience. While it is wise to live a discerning life, we are not meant to live a sheltered life. How does this help you advise and encourage others, your friends, children, coworkers, yourself, along these lines?
Q7: Wrap-Up: After reflecting on this passage and the sermon, what specific steps can you take to deepen your faith during the storms in your life? How can you help others who are experiencing storms to trust in God’s presence and purpose in the midst of their struggles?
