Sermon Study Guide
Q1: Icebreaker: What was the relationship model you grew up witnessing between your parents (if applicable)? Was it egalitarian, complementarian, patriarchal, traditional, or other? Is that model something you aspire to? Why or why not?
Q2: The Home 1: Ephesians 5 depicts Christ’s relationship with the Church as an analogy to the ideal marriage. The context is living by the Holy Spirit and in mutual submission. The wife’s subordination is not an imposed obedience to ungodly rule, but willful submission to loving headship. Do you see this in your marriage or the marriages around you? Why or why not?
Q3: The Home 2: This is the ideal marriage. But often we see a relationship of incomplete love (from the husband) with incomplete respect (from the wife). What do you do when the ideal is not met?
Q4: Church 1: In 2023, the Southern Baptist Convention expelled Saddleback Church due to the issue of women pastors. Upon hearing the biblical contexts and various interpretations of 1Tim 2:11-15, what is your own stance, and how would you talk about this with other people?
Q5: Church 2: Ultimately, the senior pastor is not the head of the church. Jesus Christ is. And in the Church, role does not define worth. Jesus Himself was the Suffering Servant, but that does not mean He had diminished worth. How do you view your role in the church?
Q6: Society 1: Like it or not, there are differences between the sexes, male and female. What does healthy masculinity look like today? What does healthy femininity look like?
Q7: Society 2: Instead of trying to morph men into women and women into men, how does the unity and cooperation between men and women resemble the full image of God, the imago dei in Genesis 1:27?
Q8: Take-Home: What part of this sermon on gender roles and women in ministry was most helpful? And how will you apply this to your life? How will this help you not win more arguments, but win more people to Christ?
