Sermon Study Guide

Q1: Icebreaker: Who in this world today, other than Jesus, would you be most willing to follow 24/7 and for life? Why that person?

Q2: In Mark 1:14-15, Jesus begins His ministry by preaching the gospel. Are you surprised that Jesus doesn’t preach that God loves them unconditionally, but instead tells people to repent and believe, since the Kingdom of God is near?

Q3: It is surprising that Jesus would call His disciples to “follow me” in this abrupt way. But given the understanding of the rabbi-disciple relationship in Jewish culture, how would you feel if you were abruptly called to follow Jesus this new rabbi? What if it meant giving up your occupation and family relationships?

Q4: Jesus is teaching in the synagogues with an authority the people have never seen or heard before. How do you discern whether the things you are learning are from human wisdom or divine authority?

Q5: Jesus performs many miracles. Starting with the man with the unclean spirit in the synagogue (Mark 1:23-26), then Peter’s mother-in-law, then many people from the town as soon as Sabbath ends, and finally the leper. Why did Jesus do these miracles? How would you feel as the recipient? Do you hold the cessationist, continuationist, or middle view of healings and miracles for today?

Q6: Jesus-mania is going crazy. But Jesus seems to want to keep it under wraps. He tells the demons who know who He is to not tell anyone. Why? What is Jesus waiting for? Is that not why He came?

Q7: Which part of this message on Jesus-mania surprised you the most? Which part resonated with you the most? What is one action you will take this week as a result?
