Sermon Study Guide
Q1: Icebreaker: How much seasoning do you like on your food? A lot or a little? Do you sleep at night in pitch black or do you have a night light?
Q2: In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus is in the middle of HIs “Sermon on the Mount.” He calls His disciples the salt of the earth and the light of the world. What are the properties of salt, and what does that say about the properties of His disciples in the world?
Q3: What are the properties of light, and what does that say about the properties of HIs disciples in the world?
Q4: When is the last time you felt like you were acting like this salt? When is the last time you felt like you were emitting this light? What were the circumstances in your life at that time? What has happened since then?
Q5: The world (“cosmos” in John 17) is “society organizing itself without God.” In this world ruled by evil powers and principalities, Satan definitely wants people to remain in darkness and for society to decay morally. What examples have you seen of this interaction between cosmos v salt and light?
Q6: How do you determine the right amount of salt and light that you are in the world? How much is too little, and how much is too much? Do you believe there is such a thing as too little salt or too much salt when it comes to acting as Jesus’ ambassadors in the world? What examples have you seen around you or in your own life?
Q7: How important do you think your daily walk with God is in remaining salty and keeping the light in you, or keep your lamp filled with oil? What are some practical ways in which you do that? Enlist a friend or your small group to pray for you in this regard, and encourage each other to be the small amounts of salt and light in your everyday lives, and together we can have an impact.
Q8: Which part of this message on Jesus’ disciples being “salt of the earth and light of the world” resonated with you the most? Which part surprised you the most?
