Q1: Jesus not only has a large crowd following Him, He also specifically appoints 12 apostles to be with Him and to participate in His ministry. The 12 come from a mix of backgrounds, had many questions and even doubts, and even made mistakes and had infighting. But they were still able to be sent out to do God’s work. How does this encourage you today?
Q2: Jesus’ family in Mark 3:20 set out to seize Jesus because they think He is out of their mind. Then in Mark 3:31-32 they call out for Him from outside. Why are they doing this? Why can’t they let Jesus continue to do the amazing good works and miracles? Are you surprised that His family would have this reaction? Have you ever been through a similar experience due to your family’s reactions?
Q3: The scribes in Mark 3:22 resort to the oldest trick in the book: demonizing and villainizing their opponent Jesus. They say Jesus’ power comes from Beelezebul, by the power of the prince of demons. They obviously could see that Jesus’ actions were supernatural. Yet their response stands in stark contrast to the crowds and disciples. Why did they come to such a conclusion? What other motives did they have to conclude this?
Q4: The Parable of the Strong Man shows the absurdity of the scribes’ statement. Clearly Jesus is the Stronger Man eradicating the “strong man” of his power, and freeing his captives. Jesus came not just to teach and heal and forgive, but to bind Satan and his power, once and for all. How have you seen the power of Jesus’ Name in your life? How does this give you hope for the future?
Q5: The “unpardonable sin” is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:28). It is good news that all sins can be forgiven. But to reject the forgiveness and then to attribute that grace with evil, is deliberate irreverence in the face of something good and holy. How hard would a person’s heart have to be to deny something clearly good and pure, and attribute it to evil?
Q6: The Stronger Man’s House is comprised of many types of people, who follow the Stronger Man and do God’s will. But surprisingly, it may not be full of religious people or even family members. How does this shake up your understanding of church and the family of God? What are your thoughts on “separation from family is never a condition of discipleship, but is a possible consequence of discipleship?”
Q7: Which part of this message on the Parable of the Strong Man surprised you the most? Which part resonated with you the most?
